The Summer Program

The GCYO Summer Program offers a professional level of instruction in a Chamber Orchestra setting. We will prepare our students to excel in middle, high school and college music programs.

Our curriculum: Chamber Orchestra instruction with possible Small Chamber Ensembles. String Instrument Techniques including: posture, positions, shifting, bow hold, tuning, and more.

All students are required to furnish their own instrument, bow, folding music stand and other accessories.

Summer Program Audition Requirements:

Advanced Orchestra – You will be asked to play two scales; the first will be your choice, the second will be the auditor’s choice. Key and number of octaves will affect the scoring. Three octave scales are required, but two octave scales shifting into third position will be accepted. Up to four minutes of prepared music of the applicant’s choice and must be a solo piece or etude. Orchestral excerpts will be acceptable only for new students who do not have access to a solo or an audition piece. Sight reading at student’s level.

Intermediate Orchestra - You will be asked to play two scales; the first will be your choice, the second will be the auditor’s choice. Key and number of octaves will affect the scoring. Two octave scales are preferred but two one octave scales utilizing all 4 strings will be accepted. Up to four minutes of prepared music of the applicant’s choice, and should be a solo piece or etude. Orchestral excerpts will be acceptable if the student doesn’t have access to solo works or etudes. Sight reading at student’s level.

Beginning Strings Program - Beginning Strings Program for violin, viola, cello and bass are offered to students from fourth grade through middle school with little or no prior strings knowledge. Although there are no audition requirements for acceptance into the elementary string orchestra, a young student must have the ability to stay focused in a one and half hour small group class.

The Fall/Spring Program

GCYO invites all young musicians who play string orchestral instruments from elementary school through college undergrad level to apply for membership.

Viola:

Cello:
- Schroeder 170 Foundation Studies for Violoncello, Vol 1; Carl Fischer Publishing
- Popper High School of Cello Playing, International Music Company
Bass:
- Storch-Hrabe 57 Etudes in Two Volumes, International Music Company

General Membership information:

Membership is not automatically renewed. All orchestra members are expected to maintain the established standards of the organization, including a positive attitude, professional commitment to the orchestra, fellow students and GCYO staff, and have good attendance. All GCYO members are required to participate in their school instrumental music program. Home-schooled students and students who attend schools that do not have a school orchestra are exempt. All orchestra members are strongly encouraged to take private music lessons with a professional, qualified string teacher.
